Every slate is made up of razor thin layers that when cleaned, will last more than 90 years. If the slates aren't cleaned, soil will build up under the edges of each slate. This causes moisture in the soil to swell in freezing temperatures, lifting and breaking slates. Avoid the exorbitant cost of replacing your roof by maintaining it.

This type of roofing is made with petroleum and the ultra violet rays from the sun will dry it out. This will cause it to shrink, not to mention that the soil will embed itself into it and become part of the surface. Once the shingle shrinks too far, the edges will start to curl up, and at this point it's too late to save the roof.
